Sony Ericsson Live Announced

Posted by Admin Tuesday, August 30, 2011

Sony Ericsson has announced a new sporty Walkman phone running Android.    Called the Sony Ericsson Live, this is a refreshed WT18i that focuses heavily on music and social networking integration.
Sporting a funky curved design that's definitely less-generic than your average Android slab, the handset measures 56.5 x 106 x 14.2 mm and weighs 115 grams.  The Walkman branding doesn't seem to be as loud as with phones in the line, though, as there's none of that liquid W logo anywhere on the front panel.  Do expect it heavily in the UI, though.
Details of the Sony Ericsson Live include a 3.2-inch scratch-resistant touchscreen 480 x 320 resolution), a 5.0 megapixel camera module (with LED flash and 720p recording), a front-facing VGA camera, aGPS, WiFi, 3G with HSPA, Bluetooth, stereo speakers, a 3.5mm audio slot and microSD card expansion.  Processing will be handled by a 1GHz chip, with the 1,200 mAh battery claiming up to almost 7 hours of talk time.
As with every Walkman handset, there's an emphasis on music-centric features here, including xLOUD (Sony's digital enhancement for speaker output), TrackID, Infinite button (jumps to a music-focused content app), Media Discovery app and access to Qriocity.  The Gingerbread-running phone also boasts "deep Facebook integration," providing access to the social site from many areas of the interface.

LG Optimus Sol Announced P

Posted by Admin

LG has announced a smartphone with a name based on the Spanish word for "sun."  Called the LG Optimus Sol, it packs what the company calls a "first-class display" as its main selling point.
Think your AMOLED display is great?  This new phone's screen should trump that, boasting an Ultra-AMOLED panel that reputedly packs more advanced reflection rates compared to standard AMOLED displays.   For the user, this improvement is realized with better clarity under the sun and even lower degradation in image quality.

RIM has announced a trio of new additions to the Curve line.  Well, it's actually just one phone in three variants: the Blackberry Curve 9350 (CDMA-only), the Blackberry Curve 9360 (GSM/UMTS) and the Blackberry Curve 9370 (GSM/CDMA).
Sporting the familiar QWERTY candybar form factor, the handset embraces the classic Blackberry styling, all while coming in at an extra-slim 11mm.  Both front and rear surfaces are curved for a sleek fit in hand, with a soft-touch band wrapped around the edges for extra comfort.

Nokia has unveiled the latest update to its soon-to-be-killed Symbian OS, along with three new devices that are going to run it.  The successor to Symbian Anna will be called Symbian Belle, bringing a whole set of new features for the platform Nokia is surprisingly still pushing.  The three debuting phones running it consist of the Nokia 700, the Nokia 701 and the Nokia 600.
What does the new Symbian flavor bring to the table?  The most notable new features include  NFC sharing and pairing, three additional home screens (for a total of six), a dynamic lock screen, live widgets in five different sizes, and an Android-style pull-down taskbar/notification menu.

The Samsung Conquer 4G sets itself apart by being one of the cheaper 4G-equipped phones out there.  Despite the price, it's quite the capable device, striking a good balance of hardware and features to go with the high-speed broadband connectivity.
Physically, it's a good-looking mid-sized phone that should fit perfectly fine in your pants pocket.  While it’s nowhere near premium in appearance, the textured back does give it a nice feel when cupped in hand.  To bring down the price, the display is one of the areas that the phone has made compromises for.   While the 3.5-inch panel is big enough for most uses, the resolution is a low 320 x 480 pixels.  It's serviceable, especially with otherwise ample brightness and clarity.

Samsung debuted a new messaging phone for Cricket's roster.  Called the Samsung Comment, it's a QWERTY candybar feature phone for texting-heavy users.
Sporting a Blackberry-style form factor, the handset measures 4.41 x 2.4 x 0.43 inches and weighs 3.3 ounces.  It appears to be Samsung's replacement for the Freeform II, although the specs aren’t all that much of an upgrade.

Remember the app Nokia 3D World Gaze? It has just been updated at Nokia Beta Labs with quite a few new changes.
There’s some pinch zooming and inertia to make scrolling that little bit nicer, imperial units, new Anna app and more:

Themes: Metro Minimal available at Ovi Store

Posted by Admin Sunday, August 28, 2011

We rarely cover themes here but looking around the N8 related groups, it’s something N8 (and Symbian users) in general still really like.
Yesterday, a symbian themer named Glenn emailed to tell us about his themes on Ovi Store. We’d like to start show casing some themes and we’ll begin with his work called Metro Minimal. It’s a simple, clean minimalistic theme, and very helpful on battery life for AMOLED screens.

Matthew Miller from ZDNet (previously of Nokia Experts too) has written a piece on Windows Phone, asking folks to at least give the thing a try (presumably before people bash it due to the MS name)
In a provocative title, Matthew claims,
“Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 is the most stable mobile phone OS“
As well as a Nokia Blogger, Matthew has experience of nearly every mobile OS and he says, “I can say without a doubt that Windows Phone 7 has been the most stable and reliable mobile phone operating system I have ever used”
Matthew talks about his experience across S60, T-Mobile Sidekick, iPhone, Androids, webOS, BlackBerry and more recent Symbian phones. He discusses things he likes about the mobile platforms and what he doesn’t
TL:DR “Windows Phone 7 may not be flying off the shelves, but in my extensive experience the platform is the most stable and reliable out there. I recommend that you at least give the platform a try because it is NOTHING like Windows Mobile and the Microsoft name does not kill the experience.”

Trying Android

Posted by Admin

Pic by N8. It already hates taking pics of my Omnia 7, now another Sammy in the house. Hmmm...
Android is the mobile OS I have least experience with. To improve my understanding of the shape of mobile OSes, I’ve got an Android handset for the next two weeks or so from the UK mobile network @ThreeUK to see what the fuss is about. What is this Android that is eating Symbian sales? What is this Android that could have been Nokia’s primary OS? And finally what Android platform doesn’t do as well as Nokia offerings (general comparisons), and what Android does that we (Nokia/Symbian/MeeGo) could learn from.
The handset picked is the cream of the crop of Android handsets. It’s only fair that I try Android on what is reported by many to be the best Android phone to date, and what, unfortunately, the handset which some Nokia fans here have ditched Symbian for.
It’s the Samsung Galaxy S2 (Oh noes, I have two Samsung phones now. I can has Eldar Award? :p).

Engadget has posted up their hands on gallery of the Nokia 600, 700, and 701 Symbian Belle handsets. There’s no reaction yet from the engadget staff on Symbian Belle.
At the end of their post is a video showing NFC check in with these new Nokias. NFC is going to be on all future Symbian handsets and is a feature Nokia wants to popularise as much as they had done with SMS.

Nokia Nearby is a hyper-local search application which you can use to look for information about places and listings near you and also share this information with any of your contacts.  While this app works on Series40, S60, and Symbian devices, it is targeted primarily towards emerging markets with a high emphasis on Series40 devices, including those that don’t have Nokia Maps or GPS on them. Nokia’s Q4 2010 Earnings: A Faint Glimmer of Hope

Posted by Admin Wednesday, August 17, 2011

It could happen.
It could happen.
So, yesterday Nokia announced its first-quarter earnings. The numbers kinda sucked, to put it bluntly, but they beat the estimates. Still, there might be some light at the end of the tunnel, and no, we’re not talking about MeeGo.
Some of the highlights:
  • Overall sales rose 6% to 12.7 billion euro, compared to last year. Devices & Services rose 4%, but was offset by a 37% jump for NAVTEQ and 9% increase for Nokia Siemens Networks (gasp!)
  • Profit fell 23% (from last year), to 884 million euro.
  • Nokia shipped 28.3 million smartphones/mobile computers in Q4
  • The average selling price (ASP) rose to 69 euro vs. last years 65 euro
  • Market share fell to 32%, from 34%
  • Nokia will host a Strategy and Financial Briefing in London on Feb. 11
That last one matters for a very interesting reason:
“Nokia must compete on an ecosystem-to-ecosystem basis. In addition to great devices, we must build, catalyze, and/or join a competitive ecosystem.”

Nokia dropped a bombshell announcement today.
Nokia dropped a bombshell announcement today.
It’s the beginning of a new era for Nokia: the company announced a “strategic partnership with Microsoft to build a global mobile ecosystem based on highly complementary assets.” That means that yes, Nokia will be adopting Windows Phone for future smartphones. But it’s more than that: the partnership means that Nokia will also integrate its current apps with Microsoft products, while Microsoft will bring its developer tools to the table.
Is it the right move? And what about Symbian and MeeGo? Details inside.
The move wasn’t completely unexpected. Nokia could have taken three possible routes for its smartphone line: MeeGo, Android, or Windows Phone. Actually, going full steam ahead with MeeGo probably would have sounded a death knell for the company, considering how ridiculously late to the game it would have been released. So the shift would be either to an Android or Windows Phone platform, and I think most people assumed that it would be the former, despite Stephen Elop’s previous high-level position at Microsoft. (for the record, I certainly did)

The N9: It's not a Windows Phone.
The N9: It's not a Windows Phone.
It’s been a long time since I’ve posted anything really worthwhile on this blog. Then again, it’s been a long time since there’s been any worthwhile Nokia news. And so, after a four-month hiatus, it’s time again to look at one of Nokia’s latest phones: the oft-rumored N9.
When we last left Nokia, the company had announced that it would be going the way of the Windows Phone, in what was probably one of the biggest deals between two of the largest tech companies out there. Nokia’s two last platforms – Symbian and MeeGo – were going to be jettisoned, in the hope that moving to Windows would give Nokia the flexibility to innovate both software and hardware. Symbian had, more or less, become a dying platform, and MeeGo wasn’t living up to its expectations as a savior for the company:

Android: Facebook Messenger Video tour
The guys at Mobile Burn takes a look at the new Facebook Messenger that went live yesterday!
Facebook has released a new stand-alone messaging app for the iPhone and Android smartphones that marries its Facebook Messaging service with the group messaging app Beluga that the social network purchased earlier this year. Called Messenger, the new app allows you to quickly and easily access your Facebook messages and chats, and start new single or group chats with both your Facebook friends and those in your phone’s contact list.

One of my favorite Mac apps has finally made its way to iOS…well, kind of. Caffeine, is a popular Mac app that prevents your Mac from going into sleep mode for a set interval of your choosing.
The Caffeine on the jailbreak store isn’t related in anyway besides the name, but it aims to do something similar.
The jailbreak version allows you to prevent your iOS device from autolocking by means of a handy Activator action. It’s not nearly as polished as the app it borrows its name from, but it’s not too shabby either. Check past the jump to see Caffeine in action on video…

Nokia N86 8MP

htcknight ohoto HTC Knight: New Pictures Revealed
HTCPedia Shop recently came into possession of some photos of the HTC Knight.  The HTC Knight is the codename for the HTC Evo Shift 4G. This smartphone is just the third device to use Sprint 4G, the other two being Samsung Epic 4G and HTC Evo 4G. The phone itself, though, actually looks very slick. Clearly, design points were taken from the EVO 4G. The Evo Shift 4G aka Knight will be smaller than the HTC Evo 4G. However, the Knight does have a bigger battery, a sliding Qwerty keyboard which the original Evo 4G doesn’t.

The Sprint HTC Evo Shift 4G is now listed at the Walmart Wireless website alongside its full specs and box contents. The HTC EVO Shift is expected to be priced at $149.99 with a new two-year service agreement at Walmart.
